GMO Potato
The Ohio State University have been researching a new genetically modified golden potato with Vitamins A and E. Vitamin A could prevent blindness in kids, the key of growth, organ development, and reproductive health and is naturally found in carrots and sweet potato. Vitamin E could protect against oxidative stress and inflammation, conditions associated to damaged nerves, muscles, vision and immune system. The golden potato provides up to 42% of a childs daily intake of Vitamin A and 34% of a childs recomended Vitamin E intake for a single serving. According to the researchers a women of reproductive age could get 15% of their recommended intake of Vitamin A and 17% of vitamin E from the same 5.3 servings.Mark Failla said that more than 800,000 depend on potato as their main source energy but these individual are not eating the right amount and not getting the right amount of nutritions. Potato’s are the fourth largest corp after rice, wheat and corn according to the US department of Agriculture. The developing potato was genetically engineered using a technique called biofortification. Giovanni Guiliano said that the biofortification technique have proven itself from the ‘golden’ rice and the golden potato was the third crop to join the group. the problem with GMO products are that they have good benefits for other people but biotech industries have shown no interest in commericialling this product such as the brown rice for example that promise could help save millions of lives in 1999 but 18 years later still not marketed.
